Probate is the legal process through which the court sees that, when you die, your debts are paid and your assets are distributed according to your will. If you do not have a valid will, your assets are distributed according to state law.

After we open a probate, the court appoints an executor.  The executor is responsible for investigating and gathering the assets of the estate.  After this is done, the executor must obtain approval from the court to distribute assets.  The process seemingly sounds simple, but it takes at approximately one year and can be incredibly complex.
